Michelle at Bleeding Espresso writes about the Amanda Knox case

I have been asked by many Americans what I think about this case.

To be honest I stop reading the American press and websites that discussed the case months ago. However, I'm very curious to hear what Michelle has to say.

Michelle's an American who has lived in Italy for seven year but she's also an attorney who writes on legal issues.

Like I said before I don't know if Amanda is innocent as I wasn't at the house that night.

Were there issues with the trial? Yes, but Michelle's post today eloquently explains why I was fend up the "OMG Italians hate America and this poor girl is being railroad" or "Italy is backwards and our justice system is the best" narrative in the American media.

Really? At least in Italy, and every other Westernized nation for that matter, no innocent person have been put to death by their government.

HERE is a link to Michelle's post. She will be writing about the trial this week.

Thank you for sharing this; I know that in the grand scheme of all that is horrible and awful of this case, the anti-American thing is minor, but as an American in Italy it just really pisses me off to hear it repeatedly...as do the next two things I'll be writing about this week :)

I haven't been following this at all... for real, a mafia guy says she's innocent? Hmm... I don't know if I believe that!

Well, I think that the PR firm her parents hired did an excellent job of muddying the water, for one thing.

michelle - you're welcome. I look forward to reading your posts.

homebody - I can't even imagine being a parent and getting a phone call that your child has been murdered or arrested for murder.

oops hit published too soon.

I thought it was weird that they hired a PR firm.

los angelista - was the mafia guy there? If not, I don't know why he thinks he knows what happened that night!

The mafia guy is sitting in jail and says that his brother murdered Meridith Kercher in a bungled robbery attempt and buried some evidence that would prove his guilt. This mafia guy says that he knows where it is buried.
Who knows whether he's 1. telling the truth, 2. liking to see his name in print or 3. just trying to get a better deal from the Italian justice system. I am curious though to know which it is.

j. doe - WHAT?! I haven't heard about this mafia guy. What a story.

Hey there, this is Judith. I couldn't get Michelle's whole post to load because it was so long!
I experience no anti-American bias, but a goodly share of opinion that we don't appreciate what we have and are selfish as a nation. I agree with that.
This case has puzzled me, although I never felt I had the chance to know much about it. The reporting was tabloidish and consisted of bits and pieces imposed on favorite shots. What has always bugged me and still does, is how do THREE people all interested in scary, dangerous sex games find each other so fast? It's not like they have a symbol to wear or they all wear pink shirts or something, or am I wrong? But somehow in a very short time they did according to the court. Frankly, wild and scary sex would have been my last guess at motive, but the Italian cops jumped right up with that really fast. These after all are kids. I know, I know, but there's no evidence that any of them was developing that interest before. Just suddenly 3 near strangers decide to rape a girl together.

judith - This case confused me as well. I've very curious to learn how the jury came to their conclusion.

I've read so many conflicting reports. Overall the British press was very anti-Amanda and the American press was the opposite.

Ragazza,

I the the PR firm came into do damage control about what she written on her Facebook page, especially, a story that she wrote was similar to what happened to Meredith Kertcher and to dispell rumors about her sexual behavior and how she got the nickname, Foxy Knoxy. Most PR firms come up with talking points and they contact media sources, politicians, etc. to gain support for whatever they are espousing. So, she needed her image fixed.

Homebody - I totally forgot about the short story she wrote and all that stuff on her FB page. Mamma mia.

You know, I have written a lot of fiction and it was fiction, not things I'd done. That evidence is spurious, IMO. I also read that Foxy Knoxy dated from 11 years old and sports teams. I don't think she was thinking, hey let's go rape somebody back then.

judith - the British tabloids ripped Amanda's reputation to shreds. Who knows what was true.

What was the prosecution allowed to bring up...what was considered relevant?

I'm looking forward to Michelle's post on Friday. I would like to know what evidence swayed the jury.
